7.3 Engage with the parents/carers
Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers.
At the schools where I have been on placement there was much discussion on how we could engage more parents participating in the learning of their children's lives. It seemed that it would be the same parents coming in to explore and look through classrooms where their child is being taught. A small upper school staff meeting had taken place to formulate ideas on how to invite and entice parents in to coming into the school for events or even on a regular basis to support their child's learning.
Some strategies that I have witnessed, experienced on placement and volunteering are:
Meetings with parents informal and informal
Concerned parents have met with teaching staff to discuss the opportunities, progress, goals and concerns of their child. There were times that parents came into the classroom to speak with the teacher. I encountered an experience of a parent that wanted to discuss math and math homework for her son.
Newsletters, class and school
I had to ensure that students delivered to their home the school newsletter and other relevant slip notes for incursions, swimming and out of school sporting events. I also sent home a letter to students parents regarding to an Art project that the class was creating using plastic bottles. I had collected some of the bottles for the project myself however we required more of them to successfully complete the project.
Meet and Greet Nights at the Commencement of the Year
At the commencement of the year I attended a parent picnic night where parents came into the school with their children. It was a successful and enjoyable event.
Participation in excursions and school events such as book week day and sporting events/carnivals
I experienced parents visiting the classroom day which was held in conjunction with book week where students and staff dressed up as their favorite book character. The theme was treasure island. It was a successful day with all staff and students making a effort to come dressed in costume. Parents visited the classroom after the events of the parade and treasure hunt that had taken place in the school grounds
Calling parents/Grandparents/Emailing Parents
I experienced calling a grand parent when a student became inquired on the sporting field. The grand parent attended the school and attended a medical center for advice before returning the student back to school.
Parent helpers
Parent helpers have come into the school to teach students woodwork and to assist in pot planting in preparation for gala day in November
Parents have also come in to support their child in the adjacent classroom.
Volunteer helpers
Breakfast club have volunteer helpers come in and assist with breakfast club. Student parents also come in an volunteer their time to the program.
