2.4 Understand and respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians
Demonstrate broad knowledge of, understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages.
Whilst on ATP one of my class indigenous students experienced racism from a non indigenous student. This was reported to teaching staff and the school principal addressed the year levels that were concerned relating to the matter. At Murdoch I studied Country, Cultures, Peoples: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives Across the ( EDN353 ) &Reading Reconciliation ( AIS356 ) units and understand the importance of reconciliation. There is much we don’t know about the experiences of racism of school students in Australia. It is our position as teachers to bridge the gap by educating all school children about the history of our Indigenous Australians so that the racism is eradicated from the school setting and students become accepting of all students from other racial and ethnic backgrounds. There is growing evidence that not addressing racism in schools can lead to indigenous poor health, well-being and poor school attendance which leads to harmful educational and social outcomes throughout their lives. The past prime minister Mr Tony Abbott said:'Getting children to school is the Australian government’s number one priority in Indigenous Affairs'.
The debates and ongoing changes to the Racial Discrimination Act are quite complex and it is somewhat clear that the act itself may never be enough to address and prevent racial discrimination in this country there fore the importance of education in schools from a young age may make a difference.
