6.1 Identify and plan professional learning needs
Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying professional learning needs.
Developing professional standards will guide me as a teacher into professional teaching, and learning practices which will improve and enhance my teaching, which will positively contribute to the public standing of the profession. The building blocks of quality teaching are outlined in the standards.
The ASTIL Standards explain the job of teachers and make explicit the elements of effective quality pedagogy in our 21 st century schools. They express what teachers are expected to understand and able to carry out at the varying stages of their profession. As a teacher I can use the standards to identify my current standing for further developments, professional aspirations and accomplishments.
There are seven ASTIL standards. The standards are interconnected, interdependent and overlap. They are sectioned into three teaching areas: Professional Knowledge, Professional Practice and Professional Engagement. Each standard has sub-standards to identify 'Teaching Knowledge, Practice and Professional Engagement'. There are four professional descriptor stages: Graduate, proficient , highly accomplished and Lead.
As a Teacher I can use the Standards to develop my professional learning goals. It provides me with a framework for self reflection, self assessment and be guided through a successful learning journey.
