Hattie & His Top 10 Teaching StrategiesAccording to John Hattie, high-impact, evidence-based teaching strategies include:
- Direct Instruction - I always give direct instructions on the learning
- Note Taking & Other Study Skills- I advise students to take notes if they need to remember material and also for question asking after the content has been delivered for further explainiations and reference.
- Spaced Practice -“This is what it comes down to: Tackling learning in various short sessions works better than learning that same thing in one long session.”
- Feedback - this is given at the time of learning or soon thee after
- Teaching Metacognitive Skills - I decide when to focus on self-regulation skills and when to focus on guiding students to think metacognitively about course content.
- Teaching Problem Solving Skills- I model a useful problem-solving method
- Reciprocal Teaching -I have students who show mastery in the learnt area to teach others in the classroom
- Mastery Learning - for example I make sure that students have mastered their learning in a math area befor moving on to the next area
- Concept Mapping- by showing my students how to use a concept map assists them visually what are the most important areas of a topic. Knowing what is most important allows them to focus on relevant information and stay organized while they study or investigate a topic. (Example underneath)
- Worked Examples - I make up examples of what the work looks like so students know what is expected.
