1.1 Physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students and how these may affect learning.
As a teacher I need to make sure that I understand how student’s physical, social and intellectual development and their individual characteristics may affect learning.
Whilst on my final ATP prac I identified specific social and intellectual learning needs of my students. For example in the math learning area not all students in my year 5 class understood the concept of division that was outlined in the Origo math learning program. I had to change my teaching approach to accommodate the students that were experiencing difficulty in understanding what had to be learnt. I used two other strategies one that I had learnt in math whilst studying at Murdoch and one other from my mentor teacher to deliver the curriculum content. The outcome of this was successful and my students were able to master the skill of division math problems.
As a teacher awareness of the physical development students is vitally important. In many schools where I have worked in as an EA and as a prac student teacher I have noted that the school s offer a breakfast club where students can come in and eat a healthy breakfast prior to the commencement of learning. The students that attend the breakfast are from low socio -economic disadvantaged families. This was an important program each morning prior to first siren for these students as it not only gave these students energy to perform the first up physical fitness activity session but also fueled their brain so they could concentrate on their learning for the start of the day.
I understand that all students go through stages of development and as a teacher I will have to plan activities that are developmentally appropriate. Whilst on my final prac I was aware that a small group of low ability students were exiting the class to another area for their learning in Math and English. When I have my own teaching class I will have to plan for these low ability students according to their intellectual stages of development.
In my final prac in the learning area of HASS students were required to work and learn collaboratively in groups with their peers. For group work to be successful the concept has to be modeled to students using strategies and techniques. Students need to learn team and social skills that are required for successfully working in teams and groups. Students need to be able to come to conflict resolutions and to understand one an others point of view in order to perform well in group work.
I learnt that, there was a need to vary the activities in a classroom, making sure that all of Gardner's Multiple Intelligence's had an equal chance to achieve successful learning. Gardner's Multiple Intelligence's allows a teacher to teach and a student to receive information in a variety of different ways and allows all students to learn in their own way. Through this experience I tried to incorporate as many of the Intelligence's as I could. I main Intelligence's that I focused on included linguistic, spatial, kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal and intra-personal.
